the chuseok holiday starts this friday, which is one of Korea's biggest family holiday of the year, alongside lunar new year. It's kind of Korea version of Thanksgiving day. the day is about wishing for a good harvest, not celebrating one that has passed. It's future-oriented.

During that time, extended families gather to enjoy time together and give thanks to their ancestors for the plentiful havest. You know, Korea is patriarchy society. so, usually, the women of the family cook a lot. They prepare more than one korean dish such as jeon, which is often reffered to as small pancakes. I've also experienced cooking rice cakes called songpyeon, which is really good. the taste is like sweet..because it has lots of sugar in it.

Actually, a lot of women these days don't like the day because some of them consider it as patriarchal customs that women sweat in kitchen, men and children just sit around TV for holiday specials. 

 

Fortunately, our family is not that conservative and male superiority. So, my family don't celebrate the day like other family. Usually we focus on taking a rest and eat delicious foods. It's almost like a contest who would laze around the most. And, we have a choice to cook just if they want, there's no mandatory at all.
